What is the doctor likely to do for neck and shoulder pain?
I’ve had the same deep tissue knot underneath my shoulder blade for a couple of months now, and also pain in my neck on the same side. My neck hurts so bad that some days I can’t turn it all the way. I’ve also got a dull ache in my forearm on the same side and some tingling.
I finally made an appointment with the doctor on Wednesday and I’m curious as to what she might say or prescribe?
I’ve been to physical therapy for a similar instance years ago, and it did NOTHING.
My mom gave me a flexiril (sp) and it just made me fall asleep. I need something that will not effect work! Motrin does not seem to do much for me, and either does the heating pad.
I guess what I’m really asking is, what has worked for you? Which med should I ask for? What kind of treatment should I ask for?

a diagnosis would be great;; then determining the protocol to actually go with the diagnosis;; nothing will really work for you until you find the cause of the "knot" & prevent it;; so, pain in the neck;; possibly antagonizing it by guarding against the pain;; using your cervical muscles in ways that are dysfunctional;; poor posturing;; poor support mechanisms;; could also be spinal related in which physical therapy WILL help in all circumstances, just either haven’t found the right treatment for you OR, you haven’t done YOUR part in the treatment plan;; ya don’t just go to the facility & have them work on you;; you HAVE to actualy apply it on your "days off", or you’ll end up reinjuring it;; motrin will only help if you are on a schedule with them, any anti-inflammatory has to be taken for a specific duration to reduce symptoms;; a heating pad will NOT help an inflammation process;; it will ONLY entice it (& knowing the general public, the hotter the "better");; NOT in this case;; inflammation + heat = trouble;; try cold instead;; hook yourself up with the doc;; get a true diagnosis of exactly what your condition is;; get into a good PT clinic (hopefully with credits toward cervical spine injuries);; find out what to do, what you are doing that you’re not suppose to be doing to that neck of yours, & APPLY it even OUTSIDE the PT clinic… good luck;; & IF this is only muscle, it’s an easy treat, but you HAVE to be involved… again, good luck… hope I’ve helped in some way…..
also, poor strength in the arms can also cause dysfunction to the cervical area (we substitute the neck muscles to do what the arms can’t);; you need to learn how to separate the two;; I’m suggesting that you have multiple antagonizers when you’re possibly only looking for one (just to make it easier for you to understand & treat);; but it’s usually several contributing factors that prolong the agony;; you need to do a lot of patient ed;; & I KNOW PT will help, just gotta find the one who cares…
