Not sure, since you don't mention EXACTLY where the pain is. However, I once had pain in the shoulder area in the front of the shoulder where the collar bone meets the shoulder. It was an inflamation of the A-C joint and was the result of overuse (raquetball, softball throws from the outfield, car waxing) that took 2 months of rest to heal.

The second link mentions golf specifically

Good luck, and if this is your injury - REST REST REST. It is the only way to get back to normal. Your doctor might prescribe cortisone injection. This will help, if it is needed - but you still need to rest it!

you could have damaged your rotator cuff, or damaged the fluid lining in the joint, or it could just be a bad strain.

I damaged the fluid lning in my right shoulder joint in a car accident, had to have cortizone injections into the joint cavity, made it much better but you've got to rest it well.

A friend of mine who is one of the top body builders in England started having pain in his shoulder, he left it and carried on lifting silly weights and ended up with a damaged rotator cuff, at least thats what he called it, he's had to stop doing certain exercises cause if he keeps doing them he'll permenantly damage his shoulder.
