Severe arm and shoulder pain after lifting?
It’s been a long time (months!!!) sice I’ve lifted weights/done rigorous excercies (for random reasons), so I decided to start back up last friday. i did about an hours’ worth of lifting and though not much, i still did my fill and finished when i started experiencing arm pains (normal, right?)
Well, i went to bed that night and woke up the next day (saturday) with severe arm and shoulder pain. Anything involving neck movement hurt, but i’m more worried about my arms. They’re kind of bent now and they’re not straight at my sides because of the muscles, i think. I thought this normal and I thought it would wear out by the end of the day, but now (sunday), the arm pain is just as severe, and is still rolling off in waves. I have a hard time bending my arms, or straightening them to do basic taks as open a door, or reach things from across the table. Is this lactic acid buildup, muscle knots, pulled ligament, or something different?
I have little to no clue, please help. (10 pts.)

All that you said is possible: lactic acid buildup, muscle knots, or pulled ligament… possibly a torn one if swelling occurred. if you heard something like knuckles popping, there’s a big possibility that you tore a muscle. However, you said that you haven’t lifted weights for a long time and I think that’s the major cause… especially if you didn’t warm up or stretch before lifting. I think this is because you haven’t used your muscles as intensively as you used to and they need more stretching and loosening up than usual since they’ve probably been so tight because of inactivity. Stretching and cooling down after workout makes a big difference also. This has something to do with lactic acid.. something like if you didn’t cool down properly, the lactic acid will build up and will cause you muscle pain. I’m just answering based on what all my coaches and trainers have told us ever since I started playing in the women’s soccer team. And very timely, I pulled my quads/thigh muscles yesterday because I didn’t stretch or warm up after months of not playing. It hurts like hell and I can’t walk properly. I went into the game with really tight muscles and my first sprint did it for me. I hope it wears off soon, it’s such a hassle ;p but even when I do stretch and all, when I play after a long time of not playing, I get severe body pain the next couple of days. I think the bottom line is, our body’s not used to it anymore. I think a little bit of stretching everyday will help in treating your muscle pain. But if it’s still swollen and still as painful, I suggest having it checked before it gets aggravated =)

If you started lifting without warming up, or started lifting at your previous level, my guess is you’ve pulled muscles, possibly pinched a nerve in your neck. Take a couple of advil and see if that doesn’t calm the pain. If you’re still messed up in a week, go to a doctor.
Above all, if you start working out again, you must start like a beginner- start light and slow to regain strength, then slowly increase weight and reps.
