Is it unusual to have a torn labrum with no pain and no symptoms.?
My son was diagnosed with a torn labrum and other significant damage to his shoulder due to a dislocation playing football. He is in no pain, has full range of motion, and still has all his strength in his arm and shoulder. The doctor is recommending surgery but he has no symptoms. Is this unusual or has anyone had this happen to them.
Thanks so much for your input. Him being only 15 yrs old this could be a crucial decision we are making for him. We have a lot to think about.

Just curious, this is one of those questions that you hate to answer because it is a personal decision. There are plenty of pitchers or throwers in sports that have torn labrums and do not undergo any procedures. They are placed in the hands of physical therapists who work to increase the strength of specific muscles to ensure that the stress upon the labrum is limited. If on the other hand pain and dysfunction develop then seeing an orthopedist that specializes in shoulder surgery would be recommended. You want a doctor that does shoulders for a professional team or a college or university team to do the procedure. If at a large teaching university medical school they should have a doctor or doctors that specialize in just shoulders and they would be the ones to see. In the meantime get a referral to a physical therapist that does shoulders. Hope this helps!
I tore my labrum my freshman year of high school while weightilifting. I had no pain or anything, just heard an unusual pop. I waited about a year and a half before I went to the doctor and that’s when he said it was torn and recommended surgery right away. I decided not to have surgery because I wanted to continue throwing shot put and discus so I waited until I graduated. I never really had any pain before the surgery, but now after the surgery it pops, catches, and clicks a lot, so I probably shouldn’t have had the surgery, cause it’s worse now, I think. Personally i don’t think I would worry about it until it begins to cause problems for him. Hope this helps some.
