I am very disturbed by this question. I'm not sure how bad the pain would be...but it doesn't always happen with ectopic pregnancies. The shoulder pain that occurs during an ectopic pregnancy is an ominous sign. It occurs after there is major internal bleeding. The internal bleeding will leak into the abdomen. Are you sure it's related to the pregnancy? Early symptoms of ectopic pregnancies are usually absent or very mild. The signs usually occur within week 5-8, with 7 weeks being the average. You would have symptoms before the shoulder pain. Have you ever had mild cramping or pain in your lower stomach? Painful bowel movements? Bleeding?

Ectopics are difficult to diagnose on your own...but you definitely need to talk to a doctor about it. If you are having pain and cramping/bleeding, then you need to go to the ER. It's better to be safe than sorry. It's not something you want to take a chance on. Ectopic pregnancies are very serious.

If you are only having shoulder pain, however, and have not had any cramping/bleeding/pain (I know you said you aren't now, but you did not say if you have had it before), then it's very unlikely that the shoulder pain is related to the pregnancy.

It's in the middle of the stretch between the end of your shoulder and the bottom of your neck, and it would be directly on top of your..shoulder. Heh.

Another sign is side-cramping, in the waistline.

I don't want to scare you, but if you have reason to suspect an ectopic pregnancy, you need to go to the hospital ASAP for an ultrasound. This is definately one of those 'better safe than sorry' scenario's, as an ectopic pregnancy can be life threatening.

If you're experiencing shoulder pain, go in or if your OBGYN has a 24 hour on call number, call it and talk to the oncall doctor. It may just be a muscle cramp, but it's simply not worth the risk. If they feel there's reason for concern, they'll do an ultrasound to check your tubes and to confirm an inuterine pregnancy.

i never got any shoulder pain when i was going through my ectopic pregnancy. i got extreme cramps to the point where i couldn't move at all anymore! i had some spotting and that was it. just extreme pain in my right side. i have never been the same either since i lost my baby 2 1/2 years ago now because of that ectopic pregnancy. if you're concerned, then see a doctor or something because i wouldn't wish that to happen to anybody.... EVER!!
